Beyond Reading recognises that reading with comprehension is a vital skill in our very competitive age. Unfortunately, in South Africa, many young learners cannot read with comprehension and subsequently will not be able to fulfil their potential.
Beyond Reading took the initiative to begin a reading centre at House Andrew Murray in Wellington. Learners between the ages of 12 to 16 are divided into four classes and they attend the reading lessons once a week respectively. The lessons are conducted by a qualified teacher.
Initially the reading levels of the learners were very low. However, the levels of the learners gradually increased in the course of the year. Now some learners’ reading levels are on par with the grade in which they currently are. This is most encouraging.
